Defense misfires, then catches fire, in double-header

Contrasting late-18th century London and Paris, Charles Dickens wrote “It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.” For the Eagles double-header yesterday it was the worst of times defensively, and then the best.

The team struggled to find our gloves and make consistent plays in the first outing vs the Houston Power. Seven different players made a total of 10 errors – the worst defensive performance HCYA has posted in many years. Without unearned runs, we would have won the game 4-3, but after all the unearned runs crossed the plate we lost 10-4.

Thankfully the double-header gave us a chance to prove our mettle, and the team responded. After a players meeting between games, the Eagles came out strong on offense AND defense, posting a 10-0 run-rule victory against our cross-town rivals, the Spring MtB Mustangs. It was our second shutout win of the young season. Most importantly, the Eagles played a great game defensively, without an error and notching some nice plays in key moments.

Our bats were strong all day, tallying 19 total hits. All of our pitchers had good outings and went after batters, throwing a ton of strikes. Yesterday showed clearly that when we also bring good defense, we’re a strong team! Here’s hoping we can apply the lessons learned into the next week, when we’ll face some stiff competition from some strong private schools in the area. Go Eagles!
